BELLARY: People in Siddammanahalli near Bellary were panic-stricken with the sudden development of pain in joints. When checked, about 70 persons in a village of 100 were suffering from this disease which was accidentally traced by the ayurvedic students of Bellary Ayurvedic College who had camped in the village as part of the National Service Scheme.
Shivarama Reddy, a farmer, who was suffering from the disease said the pain in knees and wrist is severe. His wife is also suffering from similar disease. At the initial stage, he suffered from heavy fever followed by severe joint pain, he said. The villagers for temporary relief are rushing to Kuditini, a nearby village for treatment.
Dr Pampapathi, district health officer attributed the cause to calcium deficiency and lack of nutritious food. The treatment for this is to improve the nutrition in the food items, exercise and increase the amount of calcium intake. Pampapathi said joint pain is because of oesteo arthritis which would develop due to aging and also some people might have been attacked by the virus related to psoriasis arthritis. But the disease, even in people in the age group of 25, requires a thorough investigation, he felt. He said the disease might have surfaced due to the consumption of unclean water.
Most of the people in the village consume borewell water and this could also be one of the reasons for the disease, he said. This kind of pain is normal due to lack of physical activities and unfavourable weather particularly in the winter season. As a precautionary measure, people are being administered with B-Complex and other steps have been taken to control the disease spread. A team from Government Ayurvedic College comprising three doctors and lecturers and final year students lead by Dr Madhavi Duggavi and Dr Shankar Goud is camping in the village for further study of the disease and to investigate the details.
